What is WorkplaceNL?
WorkplaceNL is a Crown corporation charged with overseeing the implementation and application of the Newfoundland and Labrador Workplace Health, Safety and Compensation Act, the Workplace Health, Safety and Compensation Regulations, the Occupational Health and Safety Act, and the Occupational Health and Safety Regulations.
Does my business need to register with WorkplaceNL?
If your business is incorporated then you must register with WorkplaceNL. Coverage is mandatory for all workers, including the owner, directors, and managers, even if the owner is the only worker.
A non-incorporated business (sole proprietorship or partnership) is not required to register if the proprietor or partners are the only workers. However, if a non-incorporated business hires a worker, or subcontracts work, then they must register.
Optional Personal Coverage is available to proprietors, partners and independent operators.
How much will it cost?
WorkplaceNL will classify your business based on your primary business activities. Each classification is assigned an assessment rate, and you will pay the assessment rate per $100 of gross payroll.
For example, a business with an assessment rate of $1.25 and an annual payroll of $50,000 would pay $625 for their annual assessment.
What do my premiums pay for?
The majority of costs incurred to WorkplaceNL go to compensate and rehabilitate injured workers. These costs are covered only by employers (through the premiums you pay) and are largely based on two things:
The most important benefit to you, aside from the health and safety training and resources, is the fact that having WorkplaceNL coverage protects you from lawsuits from injured workers.
Is there a way to reduce my premiums?
The PRIME program allows employers to reduce their premiums if they meet criteria in practice and experience components. The practice component looks at your health and safety and return to work practices, while the experience component considers the claim costs incurred by WorkplaceNL as a result of an employee’s injury. Reducing injuries and helping employees return to work quickly and safely will help minimize the impact on your premiums.
