Is your business affected by Queen Elizabeth II’s state funeral?
With the passing of Queen Elizabeth II, we felt it important to share how provinces and territories are observing the day of the state funeral on Monday, September 19.
While some government workers at the federal and provincial levels will receive a day off, most provinces have chosen to recognize the day without requiring employers to provide a statutory holiday.
Here are some details on how private businesses and schools are affected across the country:
- Federal: Government offices closed – banks, ports, interprovincial trucking can operate as usual
- Alberta: Day of mourning – suggest a moment of silence at 10 a.m. – no closures
- British Columbia: Government offices & schools closed – private businesses optional
- Manitoba: Day of mourning – nonessential government services will be closed, schools & childcare open
- New Brunswick: Government offices & schools closed – private businesses optional
- Newfoundland and Labrador: Government offices & schools closed – private businesses optional
- Northwest Territories: No closures
- Nova Scotia: Government offices & schools closed – private businesses optional
- Nunavut: Government offices closed - private businesses optional
- Ontario: Day of mourning – suggest a moment of silence at 1 p.m. – no closures
- Prince Edward Island: Full statutory holiday for all provincially regulated workers with holiday pay
- Quebec: Day of commemoration – no closures
- Saskatchewan: Day in tribute – no closures
- Yukon Territories: Government offices & schools closed – private businesses optional
On Tuesday, we shared our concerns with governments that a paid day off on such short notice would place an unfair burden on small businesses.
