With the use of annualized data from the Business Barometer®, the CFIB unveils the very first edition of the 2023 in retrospect report. This publication shows their level of confidence, the state of business, the increase in prices and wages, the limits in terms of sales, the main pressures on costs as well as the investment projects for SMEs. The report compares 2023 with the previous year, and also with the average since 2009.

Methodology
- Annual results are based on all responses received during the calendar year to the ‘Your Business Outlook’ questionnaire, a controlled-access web survey used to create also the Monthly Business Barometer reports®.
- The 2023 results are based on 6,946 responses received to the monthly surveys.
- Measured on a scale between 0 and 100, an index above 50 means owners expecting their business’s performance to be stronger over the next three or 12 months outnumber those expecting weaker performance. An index level near 65 normally indicates that the economy is growing at its potential.
