This Summer, Let’s Choose Local!

Moncton NB, July 15, 2024 – This summer, Atlantic Canadians have an important opportunity to make a meaningful impact on their local economy by shopping at small businesses, planning local vacations, and supporting community-based vendors. According to the Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB), for every dollar spent at a small business, 66 cents stays local, compared to only 11 cents at large multinational retailers.

“Our communities thrive when we support our local small businesses,” said Louis-Philippe Gauthier, CFIB Vice-President for the Atlantic Region. “This summer, every choice to shop, dine, or vacation locally helps maintain the unique character of our towns and ensures that our money stays within our region, sustaining our local small businesses.”

Local Economic Impact Misconception of Large Retailers

Research from CFIB also finds that Canadians often underestimate the impact shopping local has on their community. “Consumers typically believe that 37 cents out of every dollar spent at a large retailer remains within the local community. However, the reality is that the actual amount is significantly lower”, added Gauthier. This discrepancy highlights the need for greater awareness of how different types of purchases affect the local economy.

Estimated shares recirculated, which are 38%, 37%, 19% for small businesses, large multinational retailers with physical locations, and major online retailers without physical locations respectively, versus the actual shares recirculated, which are 66%, 11% and 8% respectively

Embrace Local: Vacation and Shop in Atlantic Canada

This summer, Atlantic Canadians have a unique opportunity to support their region:

  • Plan Local Vacations: Discover the stunning landscapes and vibrant cultures of Atlantic Canada. By choosing to vacation locally, you not only enjoy the beauty of Atlantic Canada but also support the local tourism industry. Immerse yourself in the multiple festivals and culinary delights that draw visitors from all over. Every dollar spent on accommodations, dining, and activities within the region helps sustain local businesses and preserves the attractiveness of our region to visitors.
  • Shop Small: Every purchase you make can have a significant impact. Whether you're buying gifts, dining out, grabbing road trip snacks, or shopping for everyday items, choose to shop at local businesses. These establishments often source their goods and services locally, creating a ripple effect of economic benefits. Make it a mission to seek out local vendors and artisans.
  • Make Thoughtful Choices: Be mindful of where and how you spend your money. Opt for local farmers' markets, independent bookstores, and family-owned restaurants. These small choices add up to significant support for local businesses. Encourage friends and family to do the same by sharing your positive experiences and highlighting the benefits of supporting local enterprises.
  • Community Support: Nearly all (97%) small businesses contribute to their local communities, many in more ways than one, sponsoring local sports teams, hiring local talent, and donating to community causes. Your support helps them continue these vital contributions.
